This preset captures the bold, high-contrast aesthetic and rich, dense tones similar to the iconic C8 filters. It’s the perfect professional alternative for those wanting a powerful, vibrant film look that makes every detail stand out. By emulating the chemical reaction of vintage film, the C8 creates a sense of grit and glamour that is both striking and timeless on both desktop and mobile.

C8 requires strong starting material — correct exposure, warm ambient light, and subject matter with color presence. On flat, overcast, or poorly-exposed photos, C8 amplifies the problems rather than the qualities.
Before applying: ensure Highlights are not clipping (pull to -35 before applying). C8 adds energy to bright areas — starting with blown highlights makes this worse.
Portrait photography with C8: reduce to 70-75% strength. The vibrancy of C8 can push skin toward orange. Add Orange Saturation -5 after applying and check skin carefully.
On phone photos: 75-80% strength only.
-
Is C8 too bold for portrait photography? C8 is primarily calibrated for travel and environment photography. For portrait photography, reduce to 70-75% strength and reduce Orange Saturation -5 after applying. For portrait-first work, C2 or C7 are more appropriate starting points.
What makes C8 different from just boosting Vibrance in any preset? C8's boldness comes from elevated color across multiple channels in a calibrated way — the same approach as the rest of the California Archive, scaled to maximum. Simply boosting Vibrance on another preset produces unbalanced results. C8's color presence is coherent.
