THE MONOCHROMATIC ARCHIVE — 6 PRESETS, ONE TONAL PHILOSOPHY

The Monochromatic Archive is built around one idea: black and white film is not the absence of colour — it's the mastery of tone.

Desaturating a photo produces grey. The Monochromatic Archive uses the same tonal conversion principles as classic film photography — controlling how each colour converts to grey individually, so skies go dark, skin glows, and foliage deepens.

The result is black and white that feels photographed rather than filtered. Creamy highlights with visible detail. Rich midtones with depth and separation. Fine grain that adds texture without overwhelming.

Six presets covering the full range of black and white film aesthetics — from balanced silver to high contrast, from warm darkroom tone to cool editorial. They work together, look related, and give you the right tonal character for every subject and lighting condition.

The 6 Monochromatic Film Presets

B1 — Classic Silver The baseline black and white film look. Balanced tonal range, natural silver midtones, moderate contrast. Works across every subject — portrait, landscape, street, architecture. The most versatile starting point and the preset to reach for when you want authentic film B&W without a specific style direction.

B2 — Soft Silver Softer and more luminous than B1. Slightly lifted highlights, open shadows, reduced contrast. The most flattering B&W preset for portrait work — the tonal softness is forgiving on skin and creates a timeless, gentle quality.

B3 — High Contrast Strong tonal separation with deeper shadows and brighter highlights. The documentary and street photography look — bold, immediate, and visually impactful. Best for subjects with strong directional light and clear tonal contrast between light and dark areas.

B4 — Warm Tone Classic darkroom warmth. A slight amber quality in highlights and midtones that references silver gelatin prints on warm-tone paper. The most traditional B&W look in the collection — timeless, refined, and particularly flattering for portrait and fine art work.

B5 — Cool Tone Cool, slightly blue-shifted tones with clean contrast. Modern and editorial. Best for architecture, urban photography, and contemporary work where the cool quality adds a deliberate, considered character.

B6 — Matte Film Flat, matte finish with lifted blacks. Deliberately faded — references aged B&W prints with soft contrast and an organic, slightly worn quality. Best for vintage-inspired work and artistic photography where the aged quality is part of the aesthetic.

Why B&W film presets instead of just desaturating?

Desaturation converts every colour to grey based only on brightness. Red and green of the same brightness become the same grey. Blue sky and white cloud barely separate. The result is flat, lifeless, and looks like a mistake rather than a choice.

The Monochromatic Archive uses the B&W Mix panel to convert colours individually — darkening blues for dramatic sky contrast, brightening oranges for glowing skin, deepening greens for organic foliage depth. The same technique used in the darkroom for a century.

The difference is visible immediately. One looks like a desaturated colour photo. The other looks like it was shot on film.
