Lightroom Grain Panel: Amount, Size and Roughness Explained

Lightroom's grain controls sit in the Effects panel and most photographers move the Amount slider until the grain is visible, then stop. That leaves two of the three controls at defaults that rarely suit what they are trying to achieve.

Understanding all three is the difference between grain that reads as organic film texture and grain that reads as noise applied to a digital photograph.

What Each Slider Actually Does

Amount controls how strong the grain effect is. At 0 there is none. At 100 it dominates the image. This is the intensity control.

Size controls how large each grain particle is. Low values produce fine grain resembling a slow speed film. High values produce coarse grain resembling fast film or a pushed development.

Roughness controls how irregular the grain pattern is. Low values produce uniform, evenly distributed grain. High values produce variable, organic grain with visible differences between particles.

Amount is the one most people adjust. Roughness is the one that most determines whether the result looks like film or like digital noise.

Why Roughness Matters Most

Digital sensor noise is relatively uniform. Every pixel receives roughly the same amount of random variation, which produces an even, mechanical texture.

Film grain is not uniform. Silver halide crystals vary in size and are distributed unevenly through the emulsion. The result is a texture with visible irregularity, where some areas are grainier than others and individual particles differ in size.

Roughness is the control that reproduces this. At values below 30, Lightroom grain looks like sensor noise because it is too regular. At 50 to 65 it takes on the organic irregularity that reads as film.

If your grain looks wrong and you cannot say why, Roughness is almost always the reason.

Why the Defaults Are Wrong for Film Work

Lightroom's default grain values when you first move the Amount slider are Size 25 and Roughness 50.

Those are reasonable middle positions and they are not terrible. But they were chosen as a neutral starting point rather than to match any particular film reference, and they produce grain that reads as generic.

The reason to move all three rather than just Amount is that the character of grain carries meaning. Fine even grain suggests a slow film stock in good light and a controlled, technical photograph. Coarse irregular grain suggests fast film in difficult conditions and a documentary, urgent photograph.

Leaving Size and Roughness at defaults means every photograph gets the same grain character regardless of what the image is doing. That is a missed opportunity rather than an error, but it is the difference between grain that supports the photograph and grain that is simply present.

Building Grain Into a Preset

Once you have found the calibration that suits your work, save it rather than rebuilding it each time.

Create a preset containing only the Effects panel grain settings. Apply it after your main film preset when you want to override the grain that preset carries.

This is particularly useful if you shoot multiple bodies at different resolutions. Two grain presets, one for each resolution class, applied on top of a single film preset, keeps the visual grain consistent across a mixed gallery without maintaining two full preset versions.

Calibration Values by Aesthetic

Different film references need different combinations.

Clean modern film. Amount 12 to 18, Size 20 to 28, Roughness 45 to 55. Grain that supports the film quality without being obvious at normal viewing size.

Warm portrait film. Amount 14 to 20, Size 22 to 30, Roughness 45 to 60. Slightly more organic, referencing ISO 400 portrait stocks.

Vintage and faded. Amount 18 to 25, Size 25 to 35, Roughness 50 to 65. More pronounced, reinforcing the aged quality.

Dramatic black and white. Amount 22 to 32, Size 28 to 40, Roughness 55 to 70. The most visible grain, referencing pushed monochrome film.

Moody cinematic. Amount 16 to 22, Size 24 to 32, Roughness 50 to 60. Moderate grain adding texture without competing with the tonal work.

Resolution Changes Everything

This is the point that catches photographers shooting two bodies.

Lightroom applies grain relative to pixel dimensions rather than as an absolute size. The same Size value produces visually different grain on a 24 megapixel file and a 45 megapixel file.

On a 24 megapixel body, Size 24 to 32 is the standard range.

On a 45 megapixel body, the same visual result needs Size 32 to 42.

Grain and Sensor Noise Together

Adding grain on top of existing sensor noise produces conflicting textures rather than integrated ones.

This matters most for high ISO and lifted shadow work. A file shot at ISO 6400 already has noise. Film grain applied at standard values sits on top of it, and the two patterns interfere visually.

Checking Your Grain

Three zoom levels tell you different things.

At 25 percent, roughly thumbnail size, grain should be invisible or barely perceptible. If it is clearly visible here, Amount or Size is too high for most uses.

At 50 percent, which approximates how photographs are viewed on screen, grain should register as texture rather than as an applied effect. This is the level to judge whether the calibration is right.

At 100 percent, grain should look irregular in size and distribution. If it looks perfectly even, increase Roughness.

 
 

Mobile and Print Differences

On high density phone screens grain appears more prominent than on a desktop monitor at the same percentage. Reduce Amount by 2 to 5 for photographs primarily viewed on mobile.

In print, grain is less visible than on screen because print resolution is higher. Increase Amount by 5 to 8 for print output.

FAQ

Should grain be the last adjustment I make?

Lightroom applies grain as a final processing step regardless of panel order, but evaluating it last makes sense because contrast and tonal adjustments change how visible it appears.

Does grain reduce sharpness?

Slightly, because it adds variation to edge detail. For film aesthetics this is part of the organic quality rather than a problem.

Is Lightroom grain the same as a grain texture overlay?

No. Lightroom generates grain procedurally and it responds to the luminosity of the image, finer in bright areas and coarser in shadows. Overlay textures are static and do not respond to the image.
