M4 is for architectural, urban, and editorial photographers who want the Moody Film Archive's cinematic quality applied in a cool, precise register.
For photographers who use the warm moody presets for natural environments and need a cool counterpart for urban and architectural subjects.
-
The cool quality is editorial, not cold. M4's cool undertones are controlled and precise — the result reads as intentional and editorial rather than simply cool.
It suits architecture and urban photography specifically. Glass, concrete, steel, urban environments — M4's cool precision emphasises the qualities that make architectural photography compelling within a cinematic framework.
It pairs with M6 for comprehensive coverage. Warm moody conditions get M6. Cool and urban conditions get M4.

This preset captures the moody, cool-vintage aesthetic similar to the legendary M4 filters. It’s the perfect professional alternative for those wanting an analog-inspired look that feels a bit more "underground." By emulating the color rendering of classic 35mm stocks often used in cinematic street photography, the M4 ensures your digital shots have a polished, indie-film finish.
-
Step 1 — White balance. Unlike the warm Moody presets, M4 does not require a warm white balance starting point. Set white balance to match the scene naturally — 5,000-5,600K for daylight, 5,800-6,400K for overcast and cool conditions.
Step 2 — Apply M4 Cool Matte. The cool cinematic colour, shadow depth, and film grain apply simultaneously.
Step 3 — Adjust Exposure and White Balance per photo. M4 handles the cool cinematic identity.
Architectural and urban photography: M4 at full 85-88% strength. The cool precision and shadow depth suit these subjects directly.
Portrait photography with M4: the cool direction creates an editorial portrait quality. For warm, flattering skin tones, M6 is more appropriate. For editorial and fashion portraiture where the cool cinematic quality is intentional, M4 at 80% works well.
On phone photos: 83-85% strength.

What is the difference between M4 and M5? M4 is cool with cinematic matte quality — suited to architectural and urban photography. M5 Editorial Depth has more contrast and deeper colour — the most dramatic preset in the collection for maximum impact. M4 for cool editorial character, M5 for maximum cinematic drama.
Does M4 work for street photography? Yes — M4's cool precision suits the urban, editorial register of street photography well.
