M5 is for editorial, commercial, and travel photographers who want the most dramatic expression of the moody cinematic look — photographs where the visual weight of the edit contributes as much as the subject.
For photographers whose work appears in editorial contexts where maximum cinematic quality is expected and appropriate.
-
The depth is dimensional, not dark. M5's contrast and desaturation create visual weight through tonal quality rather than underexposure — the result reads as deliberately weighted.
It produces the most striking individual photos. Of all the Moody Film Archive presets, M5 creates the most immediately impactful individual photographs.
The desaturation is calibrated, not flat. Colour is present and characteristic in M5 — muted to the point of high visual weight but not absent.

This preset captures the nostalgic, warm tones similar to popular M5 mobile film filters and the classic M-series aesthetic, making it the perfect professional alternative for desktop and mobile.

Step 1 — Exposure check before applying. M5's deep contrast amplifies both qualities and problems. Check that highlights are not clipping and that the starting file is correctly exposed — M5 at full strength on a bright file can produce blown highlights despite the contrast compression.
Step 2 — White balance. 5,000-5,400K for outdoor daylight. M5 is calibrated for neutral to slightly warm starting points — the dramatic quality reads most consistently on a neutral foundation.
Step 3 — Apply M5 Editorial Depth. Assess the result carefully. M5 produces more variation between photos than the softer presets — per-photo Exposure adjustment is more important.
Portrait photography with M5: M5 is primarily calibrated for editorial and travel subjects. For portrait work, reduce to 72-75% strength and ensure Orange Luminance is sufficient — add +8 to +12 if skin reads too flat within the deep desaturation. A Radial Gradient on the face with Shadows +10 helps lift facial detail against the dramatic background.
On phone photos: 75-78% strength.

Is M5 too dramatic for everyday photography? M5 is calibrated for editorial and commercial photography where maximum visual weight is appropriate. For everyday documentary and travel photography, M1, M2, or M3 produce more accessible results.
What is the difference between M5 and M4? M4 is cool with cinematic matte quality — an editorial, architectural direction. M5 has the most contrast and deepest desaturation — the most dramatically weighted preset in the collection. M4 for cool editorial precision, M5 for maximum cinematic drama.
