How to Fix Canon Magenta Shadows in Lightroom

Canon files develop a magenta cast in the shadow range under certain conditions. It is subtle enough to miss on a small screen and obvious enough to ruin a photograph once you notice it, particularly on skin in the shadow side of a face.

The cause is a combination of Canon's colour science and the specific lighting conditions where it appears. Once you know which conditions trigger it, the correction is straightforward and takes under a minute.

When It Happens

Magenta shadows on Canon files appear most consistently in four situations.

Mixed lighting where daylight and artificial light both illuminate the scene. A subject near a window in a room with tungsten lighting is the classic case and the one most wedding and event photographers encounter.

Deep shade under a clear blue sky. The shadow is lit by skylight, which is strongly blue, and Canon's response to that blue creates a magenta shift in the deepest tones.

Indoor venue lighting, particularly LED. Many LED sources have irregular spectral output that Canon sensors interpret with a magenta bias in the low end.

Underexposed files that have been lifted significantly. The shadow noise in Canon files carries a slight magenta bias, which becomes visible when the shadows are pushed beyond about two stops.

Why a Film Preset Makes It Worse

Film presets lift the shadow floor. That is one of their defining functions, because film emulsion never produces pure black and the lifted floor is what creates the organic shadow quality that the aesthetic depends on.

Lifting the shadow floor also makes whatever colour is in the shadows more visible. A magenta cast sitting at the bottom of the tonal range is invisible when shadows are crushed to black. Lift them to a warm grey and the magenta becomes apparent immediately.

This is why photographers often notice the problem only after applying a preset, and conclude the preset caused it. The preset revealed it rather than created it.

Fix One: Colour Grading Shadows

The most direct correction is in the Colour Grading panel.

Set Shadow Hue to somewhere between 90 and 130, which is the green range, and Saturation to 3 to 8. Green is the complementary opposite of magenta, so a small amount of green in the shadow range neutralises the cast.

Keep Saturation low. Above 10 the correction becomes visible as a green tint, which is a different and more obvious problem. The goal is neutralising rather than counter tinting. How to Use Split Toning Properly covers how the shadow wheel behaves and why restraint matters at these values.

Check the Blending slider. At the default of 50 the shadow grading bleeds into the lower midtones, which on a portrait means it reaches the shadow side of the face. Reducing Blending to 35 to 45 confines the correction to the deepest tones where the magenta actually sits.

Fix Two: The Magenta Channel in HSL

If the magenta is concentrated in specific areas rather than across the whole shadow range, the HSL panel is more precise than global colour grading.

Reduce Magenta Saturation to negative 15 to negative 30. This targets the magenta specifically without affecting the overall shadow colour or the rest of the tonal range.

Magenta Luminance can be lifted slightly, positive 3 to positive 8, if the magenta areas are also reading dark.

This approach works better than Colour Grading when the cast appears in fabric, walls, or specific objects rather than uniformly across all shadows in the frame.

Fix Three: Global Tint

If the magenta extends beyond the shadows into the midtones, the problem is white balance rather than shadow specific.

Reduce Tint toward green, typically to positive 2 to negative 4 rather than the positive 4 to positive 8 that Canon files usually want. This is the opposite direction from the usual Canon recommendation and should only be used when the diagnosis is clear.

Preventing It at Capture

Two shooting habits reduce the problem substantially.

Expose to the right where highlights allow. Magenta shadow noise appears most in lifted shadows, so capturing more shadow information at exposure means less lifting is needed in post and less magenta surfaces.

Use a custom white balance in mixed lighting rather than auto. Canon's auto white balance in mixed conditions frequently lands on a setting that emphasises the magenta shift. A grey card reading, or even a manual Kelvin setting matched to the dominant source, produces a cleaner starting point that needs no correction at all.

Checking Your Correction

Find a neutral surface in the shadow range: grey fabric, concrete, a white wall in shade. It should read neutral grey after correction. If it still reads slightly pink, add another 2 points of shadow Saturation in the green direction.

Check skin in the shadow side of a face. This is the area where magenta is most damaging and most visible. It should read as warm and slightly darker than the lit side, not as pink.

Check that you have not overcorrected. Neutral surfaces reading slightly green means the correction went too far, which is more visually obvious than the original magenta and harder to explain to a client.

FAQ

Is this a defect in Canon sensors?

No. It is a characteristic of how Canon interprets certain light sources, particularly mixed and irregular spectrum lighting. Every system has comparable characteristics in different conditions.

Does it happen on Canon JPEGs?

Less visibly, because the Picture Style applies its own shadow rendering that partially masks it. It is still present in the underlying data.

Which Canon bodies are worst for this?

Older DSLR bodies including the 5D Mark III and Mark IV show it more readily than current mirrorless bodies. The R6 and R5 handle mixed lighting noticeably better.
