Best Lightroom Presets for Nikon Z Series

Nikon Z bodies produce RAW files with a specific and consistent colour character that sits between Canon's warmth and Sony's neutrality. Photographers moving to Nikon from either system usually notice two things immediately: the greens look different, and the shadows hold detail better than expected.

Both observations are correct and both affect how film presets behave on Nikon files. This guide covers what Nikon Z bodies actually do to colour and tone, and the adjustments that make film presets work correctly on them.

What Nikon Z Files Actually Look Like

The Z series shares a colour pipeline across the Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, and Z9 with only minor variation between generations. What follows applies across the full range.

Greens render with a characteristic yellow green bias that is distinct from both Canon and Sony. Where Sony pushes green toward cyan, Nikon pushes slightly toward yellow. This is closer to the organic film rendering as a starting point, which means less correction is needed, but it can tip into a slightly mustard quality in strong sunlight if the preset overcorrects in the same direction.

Blues render deep and slightly muted compared to Sony. Sky and water in Nikon files typically need less Blue Saturation reduction than Sony equivalents from the same scene.

Dynamic range is excellent, particularly in the shadow range. Nikon Z files recover shadow detail with noticeably less noise than either Canon or Sony at comparable ISO settings.

The Green Adjustment Nikon Needs

Because Nikon greens start yellow shifted rather than cyan shifted, the correction runs in the opposite direction from what Sony files require.

Green Hue: 0 to positive 5, a much smaller shift than Sony needs. In some conditions Nikon greens need no Hue adjustment at all. Green Saturation: negative 15 to negative 25. Standard reduction applies here.

If your Nikon greens look wrong after applying a preset that was built on a Sony workflow, the Green Hue is almost certainly pushed too far toward yellow. Return it to 0 and reassess before changing anything else.

Skin Tone Calibration for Nikon

Orange Saturation: negative 10 to negative 18. Similar to Sony, notably less than Canon.
