Sony cameras are technically impressive. The colour is accurate. The dynamic range is excellent. The detail is sharp. All of that precision is exactly the problem for photographers who want film quality, because film is organic, slightly imprecise, and warm in a way that Sony's engineered accuracy is not.

Softening that clinical rendering into natural film quality is entirely achievable, and the process is predictable once you know the five adjustments and the order they need to happen in.

What Clinical Actually Means in Sony Colour

Sony's colour science prioritises measurable accuracy over flattery. Colours render close to their actual spectral values. Skin tones are accurate rather than warm. Greens are vivid and precise rather than organic. Blues are clean and saturated rather than muted and deep.

This is genuinely excellent for product photography and any application where colour accuracy matters. For film style photography, which references the imperfect warmth of analog emulsion, that same accuracy works against the aesthetic. The fix is not to fight Sony's colour science. It is to establish a neutral base first, then add film character on top of it.

The Five Adjustments, In Order

One: Camera Calibration set to Camera Standard. This is the foundation and the step almost everyone skips. Adobe Color, the Lightroom default, renders Sony files with more contrast and slightly more vivid colour than Sony's own rendering. Camera Standard applies Sony's native colour science instead, which gives a more neutral, already softened starting point before anything else happens.

Two: Vibrance negative 10 to negative 15, applied before the preset. Sony's vivid saturation is the most immediately recognisable characteristic working against film quality. Reducing Vibrance first brings the starting point closer to the muted, organic colour of film photography, so the preset is adding its character to a calmer base rather than an already vivid one.

Three: Clarity negative 8 to negative 12. Sony's sharp, high micro contrast rendering creates a crisp, precise quality that reads as digital. Negative Clarity softens this. For portrait work, push further, to negative 12 through negative 15. For landscape and outdoor work, negative 5 to negative 8 is usually enough.

Four: Green and blue softening. Green Hue positive 10 to positive 15 toward yellow, Green Saturation negative 15 to negative 20, Blue Saturation negative 8 to negative 12. Sony's vivid greens and saturated blues are the most digitally obvious part of outdoor Sony photography, and these three adjustments together move it from precise digital toward organic film.

Five: Shadow warmth through Colour Grading. Sony shadows render neutral to slightly cool, where film shadows carry warmth. Add it directly in Colour Grading rather than through white balance: Shadows Hue 35 to 45, Saturation 10 to 14.

Apply the Preset Last, Not First

The most common mistake on Sony files is applying the film preset immediately and then wondering why it does not look right. A preset is calibrated for a neutral starting point. Sony's vivid, high contrast rendering straight out of camera is not neutral, so the preset ends up compounding characteristics it was never designed to work with.

The five adjustments above build that neutral foundation first. The preset then adds its film character at the level it was actually calibrated for. Skin Tone Behaviour on the A7 IV

The A7 IV retains more highlight information than most competing bodies at the same exposure.
