Best Y2K Presets for iPhone Photos
The iPhone is an unusually good starting point for the Y2K digicam aesthetic, and for a reason that is slightly counterintuitive: the processing Apple applies before you ever see the file pushes in roughly the same direction the aesthetic wants.
Contrast and saturation are already elevated. Sharpening is already applied. The built in flash produces exactly the bright subject against dark background structure the look depends on. Most of the work is partly done before any editing begins, which is not true of a camera RAW file.
That advantage comes with one specific problem, and it is the reason most iPhone Y2K edits look over processed.
Why Full Strength Presets Fail on iPhone
A preset calibrated for camera RAW assumes a neutral starting point. Apply that same preset at full strength to an iPhone file that already has contrast, saturation, and sharpening baked in, and the two stack.
The result is not a stronger version of the look. It is a photograph where colour has gone garish, edges have visible halos, and highlights have clipped so far that facial detail is gone rather than just bright. That is over processing rather than the aesthetic, and it reads as a filter applied badly rather than a period reference.
Reduce preset strength to 80 to 85 percent on iPhone HEIC and JPEG files. This single adjustment resolves the majority of complaints about Y2K presets looking wrong on mobile.
The Manual Adjustments, Reduced for Mobile
If you are building the look manually rather than applying a preset, reduce every value from the standard camera workflow by roughly 20 percent.
Exposure: positive 0.3 to positive 0.7 rather than positive 0.5 to positive 1.0.
Highlights and Whites: positive 15 to positive 30 rather than positive 20 to positive 40. iPhone Smart HDR has already compressed the highlight range, so less pushing is needed to reach clipping.
Clarity and Texture: positive 6 to positive 12 rather than positive 10 to positive 20. The iPhone has already applied sharpening, and stacking more on top produces visible edge artifacts.

Exporting for Social Without Losing the Look
The Y2K aesthetic is almost always destined for social media, and platform compression interacts with it in a specific way worth knowing.
The high contrast and clipped highlights this look depends on actually survive compression better than a soft film edit does, since compression struggles most with subtle gradients rather than hard tonal transitions. That is a genuine advantage.
What does not survive well is the fine edge detail from positive Clarity. Instagram compression can turn crisp digital edges into visible artifacts, particularly on faces. If your export looks harsher than your edit did, reduce Clarity by three to five points before exporting rather than accepting the platform result.
Export at 1080 pixels on the long edge, sRGB, quality 90 to 95, exactly as with any other social output.
When the iPhone Original Is Already Enough
Worth saying plainly: some iPhone flash photographs already read as digicam straight out of camera with no editing at all.
If you shot with flash indoors, the subject is bright, the background has fallen dark, and the colour already has that slightly cool cast, applying a preset on top may push it past the aesthetic into over processing rather than toward it.
Compare the original against your edit at full screen before committing. On flash frames specifically, the honest answer is sometimes that the phone already did the work.
ProRAW Changes This
If you shoot ProRAW on an iPhone 12 Pro or later, the calculation changes. ProRAW applies substantially less processing before the file reaches you, which means it behaves closer to a camera RAW file than to a standard iPhone HEIC.
Apply presets at 90 to 95 percent on ProRAW rather than 80 to 85 percent, and use values closer to the full camera ranges when adjusting manually.
The trade off is file size and the extra step of enabling ProRAW in the camera app. For the digicam aesthetic specifically, standard HEIC is usually sufficient given that the aesthetic does not depend on the recoverable detail ProRAW provides.
Using the iPhone Flash Deliberately
The iPhone's built in flash produces almost exactly the tonal structure this aesthetic requires: bright frontal subject, rapid falloff, dark background. That makes deliberately using it, even when ambient light is technically adequate, the single most effective thing you can do to make an iPhone photograph suit this treatment.
Turn flash on rather than leaving it on automatic, which will suppress it in most indoor conditions. Shoot subjects one to three metres away with space behind them.
