Instagram Upload at Highest Quality

Instagram compresses every photograph you upload. That part is not optional and no setting turns it off.

What is optional is how much additional quality you lose before Instagram even starts. Most of the degradation photographers complain about happens in the export and upload steps rather than in Instagram's own compression, and all of it is avoidable.

The Single Most Important Setting

Export at exactly 1080 pixels on the long edge.

Instagram displays at 1080 pixels wide. If you upload something larger, Instagram resizes it using an algorithm optimised for speed and file size rather than image quality. That resize is where most visible softening and artifacting comes from.

Export at 1080 and Instagram skips the resize entirely. Your own software does the resizing, and Lightroom's resampling is considerably better than Instagram's.

This one change makes more difference than everything else combined.

The Other Export Settings

JPEG quality 90 to 95. Above 95 produces a larger file with no visible benefit and can trigger more aggressive compression on Instagram's side. Below 85 introduces artifacts before Instagram has touched it.

sRGB colour space. Instagram converts everything to sRGB regardless. Doing the conversion yourself in Lightroom produces predictable colour. Uploading AdobeRGB or ProPhoto means Instagram performs the conversion, and saturated reds and greens shift visibly.

Output sharpening: Screen, Standard amount. Resizing softens detail. Screen sharpening at Standard compensates without the halos that High produces at these dimensions.

Metadata: copyright only. Full metadata adds file size without benefit.

Enable High Quality Uploads in the App

Instagram has a setting that most users never find.

Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings and privacy. Find Data usage and media quality. Turn on the option for uploading at highest quality.

Without this enabled, Instagram applies additional compression on upload regardless of what you exported. With it enabled, it uses the best quality your connection allows.

This setting sometimes resets after app updates. Worth checking periodically.

Why Your Photo Looks Different After Upload

Three separate things change between your export and what appears in the feed, and separating them helps you know which you can fix.

Compression. Instagram re encodes every upload. This is unavoidable and affects fine detail, gradients, and grain first.

Colour space conversion. If you exported in anything other than sRGB, Instagram converts it. Saturated reds and greens shift most visibly. Entirely avoidable by exporting sRGB.

Screen rendering. Your editing screen and the viewer's phone screen are calibrated differently. An OLED phone with vivid display settings shows more saturation than a calibrated monitor. This is outside your control. Why Presets Look Different on Mobile covers the screen side in detail.

Only the first two are yours to manage.

A Realistic Expectation

Even with everything correct, an Instagram post is not the same file you exported. It is smaller, more compressed, and slightly softer than what you saw in Lightroom.

The goal is not perfection. It is ensuring the difference between your edit and what people see comes from Instagram's compression alone, rather than from three avoidable compression generations stacked on top of it.

Photographers who get this right report that the gap narrows substantially rather than disappearing. That is the realistic outcome.

Testing Your Own Setup

Rather than trusting any guide including this one, test it on your own workflow once.

Export the same photograph twice. One at 1080 pixels, sRGB, quality 92, Screen sharpening Standard. One at full resolution with your usual settings.

Upload both to a private account or a story you delete afterward.

Compare them at full screen on your phone. The difference is usually clearly visible in fine detail, in gradients such as sky, and in any area with grain.

Ten minutes of testing settles the question for your specific camera, editing style, and output permanently.

Carousels and Multiple Images

Carousel posts follow the same specifications as single images, with one addition worth knowing.

Instagram applies the aspect ratio of the first image to the entire carousel. If your first image is square and the second is portrait, the second gets cropped to square.

Crop everything in a carousel to the same ratio before uploading. Portrait 4:5 across the whole set gives the largest display and consistent framing.

Transfer Without a Second Compression

How the file gets from your computer to your phone matters.

AirDrop, a cable, or a cloud service that preserves the original file are all fine.

What is not fine is anything that re encodes the file. Sending a photograph through a messaging app, uploading to a service that generates its own preview, or using a gallery app that applies optimisation all add a compression generation before Instagram sees the file.

Editing Choices That Survive Compression

Smooth gradients are vulnerable. Clear sky, out of focus backgrounds, and skin are where banding appears first. Slightly more tonal separation in the midtone range gives the compression algorithm more distinct values to work with. Heavy saturation degrades faster. Instagram compresses saturated areas more aggressively. Restrained colour holds up better.

Aspect Ratio and Cropping

Square at 1080 by 1080. Portrait at 1080 by 1350, which occupies the most screen space in the feed. Landscape at 1080 by 566.

Portrait 4:5 is the largest display size Instagram allows for a single image and is worth using where the composition permits.

Crop in Lightroom rather than in the Instagram uploader.

What You Cannot Control

Instagram re compresses when serving images at different sizes and on different devices. The version someone sees on a low bandwidth connection is not the version you uploaded.

Stories and Reels compress more aggressively than feed posts.

None of this is worth optimising for. Getting the upload right is the part you own.
